12nd Annual Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine

The 12th Annual Danyliw Seminar (10-12 November 2016) is unveiling an ambitious program devoted to the war in Donbas, historical memory, and cutting edge on Ukrainian society, economy and culture. Featuring for the first time the screening of new documentaries, the Seminar will be held in Desmarais Hall 12102 on University of Ottawa campus.
The Seminar, featuring 20 presentations, 4 book panels and 2 films, will bring together 25 scholars and doctoral students -- 20 from outside Canada, and 15 attending for the first time, a testimony of the vibrancy of the field of Ukrainian Studies.

The new documentary Oleg’s Choice (France 2016), following a battalion of Russian soldiers in the Donbas war. The French filmmaker Elena Volochine will be onsite to take part in a discussion after the screening.

The new documentary DIY Country (France 2016), on the early days of the “Donets’k People’s Republic” (DNR). British filmmaker Antony Butts will also be onsite to present and discuss the film

A special panel on “The ‘Histories of Ukraine’ and the Field of Ukrainian Studies”, on The Gates of Europe (Basic 2015), a new historical survey of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy, director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. The panel will be held in memory of Orest Subtelny (1943-2016), author of the influential Ukraine: A History in the late 1980s

Two special book-based panels on the memory of World War II: on The Right Wrong Man: John Demjanjuk and the Last Great Nazi War Crimes Trial (Princeton 2016) by Law Professor Lawrence Douglas (Amherst U, US), and on the Polish-Ukrainian War, 1943-1947, featuring a new book by Catherine Gousseff (Marc Bloch Center, Germany) and a critique of Volodymyr Viatrovych’s Second Polish-Ukrainian War by Myroslav Shkandrij (U of Manitoba, Canada).

A special presentation by Ioulia Shukan (U Paris-Ouest Nanterre, France) on her new book Génération Maidan, an ethnographic study of Maidan and of volunteer movements since the beginning of the war.

Six presentations on the war in Donbas: gender, refugee trauma, life in the DNR, international mediation, media reporting and the nature of the war.
